Common Gateway Interface

An server side interface that allows a Web server to run a program or script on the server and send the output to a Web browser.

For example, when a user submits a form through a Web browser, the server executes a program, known as a CGI script, and passes the user's input information to that program via CGI. The program then returns information to the server via CGI. Most CGI scripts are written in PHP, Perl - Practical Extraction and Report Language or any others like JSP, ASP, etc.
